Hey there, I’m Alexandrine, but everyone calls me Alex. I’m thrilled to launch my new blog on my website, “The Other Alternative’. Before you groan and think, “Another blog on international development? Do we really need more?” Hold on a second, because I’ve got something fresh to bring to the table.

You see, I’ve spent the last four years of my career immersed in a sociology PhD after working with various international NGOs (INGOs). But what really caught my attention was the incredible work done by local NGOs. These folks were the true change-makers, taking on challenges, connecting with communities, and doing their best to meet donor requirements. I couldn’t ignore their vital role in development and humanitarian sector.

To my delight, the United Nations and other major aid sector players recognized the importance of local actors too. At the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), they agreed that we needed to empower local NGOs and authorities by giving them more decision-making power. It was a step in the right direction, and my interest in the topic only grew from there.

As I delved into my PhD journey, my fascination for local NGOs and the localization of aid only intensified. I consider myself fortunate to have had the chance to deepen my knowledge and think critically about these issues. Now, as I near the end of my PhD, I want to play an active role in the aid sector. More importantly, I want to give back and be able to share insights that I’ve gained through my research.

What makes my blog unique is my perspective. Having focused on local NGOs and the Grand Bargain, I feel compelled to share what I’ve learned. This blog aims to be a space where we can all reflect on topics like local NGOs, aid localization, and the broader aid sector.

I’m no stranger to the challenges and triumphs faced by local NGOs. My blog isn’t just about generating ideas; it’s about reshaping our understanding of international development and humanitarian aid. So, stay tuned, and let’s embark on this exciting journey together. Join me in exploring the world of local NGOs. Let’s challenge the status quo and envision a brighter future for the aid sector. Welcome to “The Other Alternative,” where we can think critically and dream big.
